As plug-in hybrids gain ground in Quebec, two SUVs stand out as competitors: the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV vs. the Toyota RAV4 Prime.

But the question is: which offers the best value for money?

The comparison looks at five key aspects: electric range, availability in Quebec, mechanical reliability, purchase price and warranty – including the 10-year warranty offered by Mitsubishi.

Outlander vs RAV4: who goes the furthest in electric mode?

On paper, the 2025 models of the Toyota RAV4 Prime and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV boast similar electric ranges, around 60 kilometres according to the EPA.

However, in real-life conditions, performance can vary: the RAV4’s energy management system is more focused on performance, while the Mitsubishi’s favours smoother driving and greater efficiency in town. When it comes to recharging, the RAV4 Prime takes around 4.5 hours on a Level 2 (240 V) charging point, while the Outlander, with its fast DC recharging (rare for a PHEV), can recover 80% in less than 40 minutes.

As for driving modes, both offer adaptive modes, such as pure EV, hybrid or forced recharge, as well as brake regeneration systems, although Mitsubishi’s offers more adjustable levels via steering wheel paddles.

Which vehicle is the most reliable over the long term?

With more than two decades of experience in the world of plug-in hybrids, Toyota is still one step ahead thanks to its solid track record in the field. Feedback from owners is generally very positive, with few major problems reported and no major recalls on recent versions.

For its part, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV also enjoys a good reputation, especially since its redesign in 2023, when the Japanese brand reworked the Outlander PHEV’s technical and aesthetic features to make it even more robust in the face of use in all conditions.

However, it is still a little younger on the North American market, which means there is less certainty about its long-term performance, i.e. beyond its 10-year warranty period.

Advantageous guarantees for both models

Speaking of warranties, it’s important to note that there are three different types of protection when you buy a new PHEV: the mechanical warranty, the battery warranty and the hybrid component warranties.

The Toyota RAV4 Prime comes with a bumper-to-bumper warranty of 3 years or 60,000 kilometres, a hybrid component warranty of 8 years or 160,000 kilometres and a battery warranty of 10 years or 240,000 kilometres.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV also benefits from three warranties – a 5-year/100,000-kilometre warranty on all vehicle components, a 10-year/160,000-kilometre powertrain warranty and a 10-year/160,000-kilometre battery warranty.

Which is the most attractive in terms of price?

In terms of pricing, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and the Toyota RAV4 Prime are relatively close, but differences appear on the top-of-the-range versions in favour of the Outlander PHEV 2025.

The base price of the Outlander PHEV 2025 is generally more affordable than that of the RAV4 Prime, starting at around $45,000 CAD, compared with around $50,000 CAD for the Toyota.

For the top-of-the-range versions of each model, the prices are also relatively close, but the advantage goes to the Outlander PHEV 2025. For example, the Toyota RAV4 XSE AWD 2025 with the Technology Package has an MSRP of $65,000 (before tax) compared to $60,000 for the Outlander PHEV 2025 BLACK S-AWC.

However, North American car testers generally note that, in terms of perceived value for money, the Mitsubishi Outlander tends to offer a higher standard of performance, thanks in part to the interior materials introduced on the model since its renewal in 2023.

What about government rebates in 2025?

It’s no secret that the beginning of 2025 saw the end of government rebates for hybrid and electric vehicles.

But since April 1, 2025, it’s once again possible to get a $2,000 “Go Green” rebate, whether you buy a Toyota RAV4 Prime or a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

What is the availability of vehicles on the Quebec market?

In Quebec, availability of the two models varies considerably.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is generally easier to find at dealerships, with several units often in stock, allowing for quick delivery and a wider choice of configurations. Which one is right for you?

The choice between the Toyota RAV4 Prime and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will largely depend on your priorities as a driver. If you’re looking for a vehicle renowned for its reliability, dynamic performance and the reassuring image of the Toyota brand, the RAV4 Prime is an excellent choice.

The Outlander PHEV, on the other hand, is for those who prefer immediate availability, a generous 10-year warranty and a more versatile and luxurious interior space for families (up to 7 seats on board). Not to mention the vehicle’s overall driveability, which is smoother thanks to its single-transmission gearbox that doesn’t provide the jolt that can be found with Toyota’s e-CVT.
